I’m quoting something I wrote to Price Peterson a while back because it’s relevant to this- “Do you have ANY idea what it’s like to be a Bonnie fan in this fandom? Do you have any idea what it’s like to root for a character that the writers consistently ignore on the show, no family, no house, no other emotion displayed other than anger? Do you have any idea what it’s like to sit behind a computer screen and have to read comment after comment about Katerina Graham and her twisted mouth and her fake tears and comments about how her character should be killed off the show? Do you have any idea what it’s like to be a fan of any black female character on any TV show and having to defend them day in and day out because people don’t want to take the time to try and understand their perspective or where they are coming from? Do you have any idea how much Bonnie reminds me of myself, how much I see myself in her, how much I feel for her because I feel like her life is a reflection of my life and her pain is a reflection of my pain and then have to go on any forum or recap or youtube video and see nothing but comments calling her incompetent, a waste of a character, ugly, useless, undeserving of love and shipping her with death? And even if you are thinking to yourself right now that all the characters receive this level of hatred… don’t. Because it would be a lie.”
That’s what people don’t understand. When you bash a character, you’re bashing every person who relates to that character. Every person who has ever had to go through what that character has gone through. Every person who idolizes that character because she is a representation of what you are and what you want to be. And they expect us not to take it personally and get offended? I love Bonnie and I have always loved Bonnie from Day 1 because I SAW MYSELF IN HER. I UNDERSTOOD her. When she cried, I cried. When she was happy, I was happy. People seriously need to think twice before they character bash. You never know what someone is going through in life. That’s why I never support sites or people who do it. It’s fine if you have something constructive to say about the characters or if you give valid reasons for why you don’t like them. But when you start saying things like “Character ABC needs to just fucking die already” for a character that isn’t meant to be a villain… I have no tolerance for that shit.
